St. Martin’s Prayer for Peace is every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in church.  Please come to pray for our country, for peace in the world and for the safety of our brave soldiers stationed around the world.  All are welcome to join us.

Telephone Prayer Chain:  Are you or someone you know in need of prayers?  St. Martin’s Telephone Prayer Chain will take your request for prayers without a lot of questions and call it through to a team of devout people who will be praying for your request.  Give us a call and put your needs in God’s hands.  For prayer requests or to join the prayer group, call Bob or Mary at 662-0178 or call Peg at 922-7575.

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time:

In today's gospel Jesus commands “put out into deep water” Even though Simon Peter is convinced that there are no fish available, he does what Jesus tells him and lowers the nets." His trust is rewarded not only by a huge catch of fish, but by Jesus' call to become a disciple. Peter, James, and John, overwhelmed by the presence of Jesus, drop everything and follow Him. To be a follower is to “put out into deep water” day by day. Jesus is always there with words of reassurance; “Do not be afraid”.

Prayer Moment:

Loving Jesus, give us the courage and the patience to truly learn about you and our Catholic faith.

A Vocation View:

Holiness is a gift of God.  Open yourself to the gift.  When God calls, be ready  to respond: “Here I am, send me!”

PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK OF OUR PARISH:

Remember in your prayers those who are in nursing homes, sick at home, and all who have received prayer blankets.

In April 2003, new national hospital-patient privacy laws were enacted.  Therefore, many hospitals will not notify St. Martin's of your admission.  If you would like someone from St. Martin's to visit you in the hospital, please call the parish office to notify us.

If you know of anyone who can benefit from a PRAYER BLANKET from St. Martin’s, please call the parish office at 661-2000, to remind those who need it that the people of St. Martin’s are praying for their physical, mental and spiritual health.

Honoring Our Married Couples:  Next weekend, February 13th & 14th, we will be honoring all of our married couples here at St. Martin. (What better time to so that than Valentine’s weekend?)  At all of our Masses, we will have a special blessing asking God to strengthen and deepen your love and commitment in the Sacrament of Marriage.  At the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, we will honor in a special way all of our couples who are celebrating their 25th, 50th, 60th or above wedding anniversaries during 2010.  This will be followed by a reception in Fr. Mick Hall.

Palms & Ashes: The season of Lent is just a week and a half away! As I mentioned last Sunday, we invite you to bring to church this and next weekend the palm that your received last Palm Sunday. (Baskets are available at the entrances to the church where you can place them.)  These palms will be burned and their ashes used this year on Ash Wednesday, February 17th.  The cycle continues as we remember, year after year the Lord’s passion death and resurrection.  Also, one final reminder that we will not schedule any Baptisms during Lent except in cases of an emergency or pastoral necessity.   We are looking forward to celebrating the living waters of Baptism with the new members of our faith community throughout the Easter season.

Looking Ahead:  Masses on Ash Wednesday will be celebrated at 6:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 12:00 noon and 5:30 p.m.

Another opportunity for prayer during Lent will be the Stations of the Cross which will be prayed each Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the church.

We will publish our entire Lenten schedule in next week’s bulletin.

A warm welcome to the Psallite Children chorus who are singing at the 5:00 p.m. Mass this weekend.  Our parish is blessed by your beautiful voices in our celebration of the Eucharist.

Winter Blessings!

Fr. Terry

SOUP & BREAD SUPPER: Join us on Tuesday, March 2 from 6:00-7:00 pm in Father Mick Hall for our first Lenten Soup and Bread Supper.  In the Lenten spirit of sharing we are making this event a Pot Luck supper.  Fill your crock pot with a batch of your favorite soup and bring it to share with your fellow parishioners.  Not a soup maker?  Join us anyway; we’ll have plenty to go around.  We will provide bread, drinks, bowls and spoons (although you could “go green” and bring your own soup bowl or mug!).  After enjoying the wonderful variety of soup stay for our featured speaker, Greg Nolan, who will speak on his recent trip to Africa.  Please call the parish office at 661-2000 if you are able to help out with the soup!

WANTED!!  The 2010 Festival is in dire need of Festival Chairpersons.  A Chairperson for a booth would need to be present for the entire weekend of the festival.  The job of a Chairperson is to oversee the operations of a particular booth.  Treat your booth as your own business!  By having just one Chairperson for each booth for the festival weekend provides overall better continuity.  The duties of a Chairperson are not really hard.  All you have to do is get your cash box and “inventory” in your booth each day of the festival, be responsible for the cash turn-ins collected each hour, help get workers for your booth if possible, (the festival committee will also help to obtain workers), turn in your cash box each night to the bank and in general, just be a good ambassador for our parish.  The success of the festival helps our school and parish, but depends on you, our parishioners.  Consider chairing a booth; we need you.  Please call Margie Hammitt at 574-1056 to discuss this opportunity.

All 25, 50, 60 & above anniversary couples please call the parish office at 661-2000 by February 1st to let us know your anniversary date and to let us know if you’ll be attending the 5:00 p.m. Mass.

If you are a new volunteer for any sports, the parent of a Kindergarten child, going on field trips with the school for the first time, or new to St. Martin in any way and will be working with the children, you must be fingerprinted and attend  a Child Protection workshop BEFORE you can work with children.  Please note that the fingerprinting “clearance process” could take up to three weeks, and you will NOT be permitted to participate with the children at this time. If you have lived out of state at any time over the past five years, the “clearance process” could take months.

St. Teresa of Avila will offer fingerprinting Monday thru Friday every afternoon from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.  Friday ONLY - they will offer fingerprinting from 9:00 to 10:00 am.  Also, they will be available every 2nd Thursday of the month from 5:00 pm to 6:45 pm.   Questions please call the parish office at 921-9200.

St. James, White Oak, will have fingerprinting available Monday’s 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, Thursday’s 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and Friday’s

The third presentation from Hospice of Cincinnati's is: "How to Care for Your Loved One With Dementia", and will be presented on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 7:00 pm in the Red School Building.   Dementia has robbed your loved one of the ability to think coherently or to remember.  What can you do to enrich their lives and to be kind to yourself at the same time?

Family Corner

Marriage Moment

Trying to decide how to celebrate Valentine's Day? Candy, flowers, and dinner are nice but predictable. Try something new:
1. Honor your love by honoring those who need tangible love. Make a donation to Haiti.
2. Renew your wedding vows. If you don't have the formal words, put it in your own heartfelt words.
3. Pray together for five minutes or more.

Parenting Pointer

Unless you've been living in a cave, you and your children have been inundated with news about the earthquake in Haiti these last few weeks. Perhaps you and any older children have donated to the relief work, but what can a baby or toddler do? Not much. They are with us to hug and remind us that life is fragile. Pray again for parents and children who no longer have each other to hug.
