Catholic Schools Week Celebrated St. Martin of Tours School recently celebrated Catholics Schools Week. The Archdiocese theme this year was “Dividends for Life”. The Catholic Education our students receive here at St. Martin will surely reap dividends for their future. We continue to provide a firm foundation in academics, faith formation, self-discipline and morals. Academics remain very strong at our school. Our students receive excellent preparation for high school from Jim Vassallo’s science lab, from our advanced math classes, from the introduction of Spanish to our continual technological advances. We were the first school on the Westside to equip every classroom with SMART boards, projectors, laptops and VCR/DVD players. Our students are well prepared for their futures when they leave our school, not only for high school but also for the rest of their lives.
Centennial Celebration St. Martin of Tours is gearing up for a year-long celebration of our 100th Year Anniversary! A committee has formed and is meeting regularly to plan events. We will kick-off our year of celebration on November 11, 2010 (St. Martin of Tours Feast Day) and continue with special activities through November 11, 2011. We will be offering many opportunities for our alumni to participate in this year of celebration. Be sure to watch for your fall issue of Tour Times for more information on the kick-off and other important dates as well. Join us as we come together to celebrate this very important historic milestone.

Alumni Correspondence Robert Hermann (Class of 1942) sent in a summary of his life after graduating from St. Martin. He went to Elder High School and then joined the Merchant Marines. When he returned from the Merchant Marines, he married and had four children with his wife, Sylvia. Today, they have nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren! Sadly, they have buried a daughter and a great-grandchild. Bob was ordained a Deacon for the Covington Diocese in 1992. He plans on retiring in early 2010. He remarked that after putting his life in abbreviated form on paper, it didn’t seem like much. But, his life has been very full and very happy. Bob says that God has been generous to his family and for that he is thankful. Bill Rueve (Class of 1950) sent us a thank you note for the thank you note that we sent him for his donation to our Alumni Association for new school laptops. We have the best alums! Kenneth O’Keeffe (Class of 1955) sent an e-mail to thank us for the newsletter updates and to comment on the demise of the convent. As an architect, he was saddened by the loss of an historic community landmark. Kenneth lives in the historic part of “Oldtown” in Scottsdale, Arizona called Villa-Monterey. He married a French Canadian and has two grown sons. He continues to practice architecture, designing mansions and motor yachts. He enjoys riding his beach cruiser, swimming and shooting pool. Kenneth is looking forward to his 55th Reunion this year! Glenn Oberding (Class of 1966) sent us a letter about his family. His mother Stella Goldberg Oberding (Class of 1933) has resided at the same residence for approximately 85 years and has been a lifelong member of St. Martin of Tours parish. His parents both volunteered for various church and school projects over the years. Glenn’s parents were married here at St. Martin in 1941 by Monsignor Metzdorf. Glenn’s father is now deceased, but his mother and brother Jim Oberding (Class of 1971) both still attend mass here and participate in many parish events. Marilyn Grote Meyer (Class of 1967) sent in a donation for new school laptops in memory of her father John Grote. Mr. Grote worked in our school computer lab upon his retirement. Marilyn remarked about how much he enjoyed working with our school children and she knows that he would want to help raise money for the new computers. Mary Jo Flamm Miller (Class of 1970) e-mailed to comment on the convent demolition. It is often sad for alumni to see some of the physical changes in their old stomping grounds. She also mentioned the fact that now only one of her teachers remains here at St. Martin school, Mr. Vassallo. Bittersweet memories indeed.
Upcoming Reunions St. Martin of Tours Classes of 1977 and 1985 are planning reunions. If your class is planning a reunion, please let us know. Also, any classes that recently held reunions are asked to send an updated class list to Donna at the rectory.
A Great Big Thanks We would like to thank those of you who sent in donations for our new school laptops. Your donations will directly benefit our students here at your alma mater. We appreciate our St. Martin Alumni and your continued support of our school. |
