Novena to the Holy Spirit

What is a novena? A novena is a traditional prayer devotion in which a particular set of prayers are said for nine consecutive days. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he commanded his apostles to “wait for the promise of the Father” in Jerusalem. Nine days later the apostles celebrated the Jewish feast of Pentecost and God fulfilled his promise by sending the Holy Spirit. This was the first “novena.”

In preparing our hearts for Pentecost Sunday, together let us commit ourselves to praying a novena to the Holy Spirit, imitating the example of Mary and the apostles who prayed intensely in the upper room. Traditionally, the novena to the Holy Spirit begins ten days prior to Pentecost

Where Do We Begin?

The online prayer service with a printable worship aid available on our St. Martin of Tours Parish and School Facebook Page, https://www.facebook.com/smotschool/ is a good place to start! Along with structured prayer and Scripture found in the liturgy of the Church, please do not be afraid to include your heartfelt spontaneous prayers too. Devote special time for praying the Rosary and encourage each member in your family to lead a decade, etc.

Where Do We Pray?

Consider establishing a special place in your home that draws attention to a sense of prayer. With the crucifix in a prominent place, identify a specific table (any size) as your prayer table and adorn it with a cloth that indicates the current liturgical season. With the Bible enthroned, sacred objects such as a rosary, an icon, a crucifix, and a candle are also nice additions.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

When we cannot receive Holy Eucharist in person

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen

A Prayer Amid a Pandemic

As a parish family, we invite you to pray the following prayer each day for God’s protection and healing….

Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love.

Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. - Read More

Noticing Deeply the “Little Easters” of Everyday Life

Although as a parish family we are unable to gather in our sacred space of St. Martin of Tours, Easter still beckons around the corner in the context of our ordinary lives.  The powerful symbols of hope and joy that lie in the resurrection of our Savior, Jesus, are made clearly visible at our local grocery stores with the presence of bright spring colors and colorful egg-shaped candy.

Easter Prayer

God of Spring and Easter you journey with us daily, breaking bread, renewing, nurturing, revealing your presence among us and in us.  Be love in us as we journey.  May we welcome the stranger and be open to the bread of newness, knowing that it is you.  May we break and share the bread of our lives and be transformed into your presence.  Thank you for the treasure of faith.  Thank you for the gift of being able to rise each day with the assurance of your presence.  God of Transformation, we praise you.  Amen.
